Earth Day 2026: Driving Measurable Impact Through Smarter Lighting

As sustainability efforts continue to accelerate, energy efficiency remains one of the most impactful ways businesses can reduce both operating costs and environmental impact. The transition to LED lighting and responsible recycling practices is playing a major role in reducing emissions, minimizing hazardous waste, and improving overall energy performance across commercial properties.

LED adoption continues to expand as organizations look for practical, scalable ways to cut energy usage. Compared to traditional fluorescent systems, LED lighting significantly reduces electricity consumption while delivering longer lifespans and improved performance. At the same time, proper recycling of legacy lighting materials ensures harmful substances like mercury are safely contained and kept out of landfills.

At Bay Lighting, we’re proud to support these efforts across Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia by helping businesses upgrade their lighting systems and responsibly recycle outdated components.

In celebration of Earth Day 2026, we’re excited to share the collective impact our customers made over the past year:

Bay Lighting’s recycling statistics for 2025 infographic

By converting over 100,000 linear lamps to LED, our customers helped achieve measurable environmental and financial benefits, including:

  • 7,012,765 kWh reduction in annual electricity usage
  • $911,660 in annual energy savings
  • 43,508 lbs. of fluorescent lamps recycled (equivalent to 6 tractor trailer loads)
  • 50,661 lbs. of landfill waste eliminated from lamps, ballasts, and batteries
  • Safe recycling of mercury-containing materials, preventing environmental contamination

These results highlight the real-world impact of upgrading lighting systems and prioritizing responsible disposal practices. From reducing carbon emissions to minimizing hazardous waste, every conversion and recycling effort contributes to a more sustainable future.
